Leaving Cambridge, England

Dear family and friends,

I am sitting in a beautiful home overlooking the stunning area in what is called The Lake District in the Northwest part of England.  This has been a time of reflection and quiet and heartfelt gratitude!

We left our beloved Cambridge on Monday morning, January 30.  I must say we didn’t leave without shedding tears.  Our past three weeks have been packed full of reaching out to all those we have grown to love as our own kin.  This includes children, YSA’s, adults, members, and non-members alike!  I can’t believe how fast the time has flown!  And I can’t believe how incredibly blessed we have been.  We have felt the Lord’s Hand guiding us in miraculous ways.  People we felt we needed to see were put in our path when the time grew short.

The week prior to our leaving, we scheduled time to meet with our wonderful young single adults who are struggling.  How we love them.  We needed to spend one last time to express our love and let them know that Heavenly Father knows them and loves them!  We needed to say goodbye to our dear friends from the Methodist Church and St. Giles Church.  We needed to say goodbye to our friends we made at the shops and the grocery store.  We were asked to speak in Sacrament meeting on the 22nd of January and at that time shared our testimonies and love of the Gospel and of the people in the Cambridge Ward.  Then began our last week of cleaning the flat.  We wanted to have it spit-spot clean for our new friends, Dwayne and Nancy Westenskow who are the missionaries taking our place.  Brad was a great help.  While I cleaned out cupboards, he washed baseboards, vacuumed and dusted door frames.  Hey, maybe we could start a cleaning service in our old age!!!!  The place sparkled when we left!  We moved into the Arundel Hotel about a quarter of a mile away from our flat at the request of our mission president, so the Westenskows could move right into the flat that now is theirs.  We stayed there from Wednesday night to Monday morning.  The night before we left to pick up the Westenskows we were invited to join Ryan Blank, one of our YSA’s to attend a formal hall at his college to celebrate Burns Night with him.  What better way to leave!!!  This is an annual affair honoring Robert Burns, the Scottish poet.  We had bagpipes, ate haggis, and  listened to words Robbie Burns wrote and heard about his short, but colorful life.  At the end of the evening we all stood to sing Auld Lang Syne!  (I didn’t know he wrote that until then!)

Thursday morning we had the missionaries take us to the train station and we headed to London to pick up our replacements and have our exit interview with President Stevens!  As soon as I walked into the office and saw the office couples and the AP’s and the Stevens, I burst into tears!  These are fellow travelers we have come to love with all our hearts.  They had prepared lunch, and we were able to share with President Stevens some of our experiences and testimonies of this glorious work!  How we love this amazing man.  We carried the Westenskows luggage onto the train and got a taxi back to the flat at the train station.  They were pretty hammered.  So to keep them awake for a few hours, we took them walking through town centre.  They were immediately smitten!  We went to the bank, showed them key stores they would want to know about, stopped for hot chocolate and then took them to King’s College for Evensong!  What a glorious experience to hear that beautiful music in that iconic chapel!  We walked them home.  I had made a pot of soup and we shared a fun meal!  It hit the spot because it was really cold the day they got here!  For the next two days we oriented them and took them to meet some people.  We fell instantly in love with the Westenskows.  The Lord has sent them here.  They are warm and will be such a strength to the missionary work in Cambridge.  We are leaving the work in great hands!  We are very grateful and relieved that the Lord sent such a stellar couple!!!

Sunday was a day we won’t soon forget!  We met with the Bishopric.  The Westenskows shared beautiful testimonies.  We enjoyed the meetings immensely.  In fact one of our friends, David Arnold came to church to say goodbye.  Brad told him we should have told him we were leaving every week so he would come to church.  He came only a few times, but because we would go to his workplace (He worked as the grocery manager in Bookers, a wholesale store), we developed a genuine friendship with him.  Following the block meetings, the ward had planned a munch and mingle to say good bye to us and to welcome the Westenskows.  Talk about an emotional experience!  The members were so kind.  We were just blown away by their kind words and their goodness toward us.  One of our dear friends we have gotten to know has chosen to be baptized!!!  Tina Nysembi!  We were soooo excited!  Unfortunately, she won’t be baptized until February!  After our YSA Sunday School class, the YSA’s sang the song “God Be With You Til We Meet Again”  Then they asked me to say the closing prayer!!!!! (Friday night we had our last Institute meeting and we had so many of our dear YSA’s come, even the inactive ones.  They presented us with a bound book with a caricature of us and individual letters they had written.  Again, we were so humbled by their kindness to us!)

So, Sunday night, after an emotional day, we both were almost speechless at the amazing thoughtfulness and kindness of all of our dearest friends over the past month.  They have showered us with kind words, lovely gifts, and priceless memories.  We will never forget this past year and an half.  We will forever hold these dear friends love in our hearts.  I can’t thank my Heavenly Father enough for allowing us to have this incredible experience in this part of His vineyard!

God lives!  He knows us individually!  I feel my life will be forever better for having this choice opportunity!  Jesus is the Christ!  Joseph Smith is the Lord’s foreordained servant in these the latter-days!  Thomas S. Monson is the Lord’s living prophet today!  The Savior will come again!  How glorious will be His return!

We love you all,  See you soon!  We are heading off to Scotland tomorrow to see our dear friends, the Tilbrooks, then to Preston to the temple to do some of Chloe’s temple names!!!!!!  Then we meet up with President and Sister Stevens  for dinner the night before we fly home  to Houston on Feb. 10, then fly into SLC on Monday, Feb. 13!!!!!!

Love forever,

Coming to the End

Dear family and friends,

Good afternoon!  Sorry I missed last week.  We are on high speed to try and catch up with all members, non-members, friends we want to see and visit with before we leave.  So our diary is filled up with appointments!  We have loved it!

We have finished up with our homeless project assignments, and were able to say good-bye to many dear friends.  This past week we met another friend, Jill there.  We had such a delightful visit and we both felt badly that we didn’t meet each other earlier.

For Christmas, Dave and Julie and family sent us their testimonies of the Book of Mormon and challenged us to give away copies of the Book of Mormon with them.  I want you to know what a miraculous experience that has been.  Our dear friends, the Smiths whom we love so much, who are struggling with their faith, we felt are in such need for the spirit in their lives.  I felt really impressed that we needed to challenge Aimee to sincerely read the Book of Mormon again.  So we stopped by.  We gave her a copy of the General Conference Issue with a specific article marked for her to read, as well as a copy of the Book of Mormon with our testimony in it, Julie’s, testimony, and Lily’s!  The Smiths have a sweet little boy, Max who is coming up on 2 years old, and Aimee is expecting baby #2.  So when we gave her the Book of Mormon with Lily’s testimony in it, she was so excited!  I know I’m going to have a girl, she said, and we love the name Lily!!! (She found out 2 days later that they are going to have a girl!  What they are going to name her is yet to be seen!  I hope it is Lily!!!!)  She was very touched by your testimonies and promised to begin reading it again!

Then we went to visit our friend, Andy, who owns a bike shop in Cambridge.  We took him a Book of Mormon with Dave’s testimony in it.  He was very appreciative as well.  I’m saving Bailey’s and Maddie’s testimonies to give to our neighbors next door!  Thank you for the wonderful testimonies!  We are very grateful.

We’ve had some glorious culinary experiences.  Dear friends invited us to a fabulous pub in a little village about 40 minutes from Cambridge.  It was truly a Hobbit Pub, with short ceilings, a warm fire, window seats, and walls covered with silver, copper, and brass antiques.  Brad had to duck to go from room to room.  The plastered walls and exposed beams added to the charm.  The food was out of this world.  I had lamb kabobs and Brad had cod.  Then this week we were invited by our friends, the Cooks, to go to London to meet up with their daughter, Melissa (who is a chef herself!) to visit Burrough Market!  This is close to Tower Bridge, near The Shard, right next to the River Thames.  It is an open food market that sells every kind of food you can imagine.  We had to sample the pancakes, the Scottish eggs, Ricolette, cream filled donuts.  Yes, Becca, I am signing up for your exercise package when I get home!!!

We’ve met with so many of our YSA’s, many who are struggling and it gives us a chance to share again our testimonies and our love.  We’ve started up our FHE and Institute classes.  A highlight for us was to take Lucy Wedderburn, our new convert, to the London Temple, to do baptisms for the dead!  This was awesome.  The officiators were so kind to her and made her feel so welcome.  She really has a fear of going under the water and said she would only do 5 names.  But after 3 names, she told Brad she would be ok.  She was baptized for 20.  We were very proud of her.  These were names a dear woman brought to the temple that morning.

One last miracle I will share happened early Saturday morning.  We had planned to return to visit an inactive woman in the ward.  We had tried before Christmas, but she wasn’t in and we wanted to come back after the Christmas rush.  She owns and lives in a Restaurant/pub/hotel in a place called Horseheath.  It is very beautiful.  We have never met her and didn’t know how she would respond to our visit.  We went into the pub and she was standing behind the bar.  I said as I reached out my hand, oh, you must be Tracy.  Then we introduced ourselves.  She was absolutely lovely.  She invited us to sit down and talked with us for about a half an hour.  She was raised in a very active LDS home.  Her father was president of just about everything in the church she told us.  When she was about 18, she chose another way and her father has been trying to get her back into the church ever since.  She doesn’t appreciate his constant nagging at her, but she loves her dad and keeps taking the Book of Mormons he keeps giving her.  She told us how she loves the church and all the good it has done for her parents and sisters.  She couldn’t say enough good about the Church.  So we asked, was she offended or why did she leave.  She said, she just made other choices with her life.  We invited her to come back.  She lives with a partner that wouldn’t be sympathetic to the church, so she says she won’t come back.  We testified to her that Heavenly Father loves her and know her and asked if she wanted home or visiting teachers.  She didn’t want any contact from the church, but she wouldn’t have any trouble coming back to church, if she felt the time was right.   Our friend, had been sending her notes every month for over a year, just to let her know that she was cared about.  We explained that to her, but she gratefully declined any future notes.  The interesting thing is that no one we talked to in the ward, Bishop, our note writing friend, had ever met Tracy.  We don’t fault anyone.  There are over 400 names on the membership list, and so many of the names don’t even exist. The miraculous part of this experience was that Tracy made the observation that our visit that morning was not a coincidence.  Her partner was out of town and she didn’t have any pressing issues at that time that we came.  She was very appreciative of the visit. When we asked her if we could do anything for her, she requested that we pray for her sister who was going through a very difficult challenge.  We pray that hopefully something will touch her heart and she will come back!!!

There is so much still to do here in Cambridge!  It seems that we have barely touched the surface!  This mission has changed our lives however.  We have been able to see more than ever, the power that the gospel can have in one’s life, if we just embrace it with our whole heart, might, mind and strength.  We love our Heavenly Father and His Son!  This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!  He is at the helm.

We love you all!  Happy Birthday this month to our little Jordan Jackman on January 20! (Big 1st Birthday!) and our beautiful Amber on January 22!  Also great wishes to Justin and Amber on their wedding anniversary on Jan. 14th!

Love to you all!

Happy New Year

Dear family and friends,

Happy 2017!!!  What a great number and what a great year!  2016 was such an incredible blessing in our lives, one I will be forever grateful for.  Now that January is here, it has become very real that we are actually going home!  We sat down yesterday to plan out our month to make sure we could schedule time for all the people we have come to know and love these past months.  Our month is very full!  We are really excited for that.

This past week has been a week of downtime pretty much for us.  All of our YSA’s are gone.  We visited so many of our friends last week.  The city of Cambridge is like a ghost town.  We have enjoyed our walks each day because there is very little traffic and it is very quiet and foggy and beautiful!

We did enjoy Boxing Day with our friends, the Haskins.  After Jim and Nita’s delicious meal, we watched the Carols From Kings (performed at King’s College Chapel) on TV.  This concert is well known throughout the country and is televised because it is so hard to get seats in the venue.  The first song the choir sang was Angels We Have Heard On High, the hymn arranged by Mack Wilberg.  Wow!  Were we proud!  Monday night we even splurged and went to see the new Star Wars Movie.  There were about 10 people in the theatre!!

We took the opportunity to go into London on Thursday to take a tour of Kensington Palace.  The day was cold, but beautiful and the palace was lovely.  I bought a couple of books to help me understand the history of the monarchs in this country.  After the tour, we took the tube to Harrods.  Brad is looking for a Wedgewood plate.  This store is beyond belief.  I think everyone in England was there when we got there.  It was a mass of bodies moving in this gazillion square foot store.  We finally found the dish floor.  No Wedgewood plates, but they did have a Wedgewood tea set for £5000.00.  Well, no thanks!  For fun I looked at a glass urn, about 2 ½ feet tall with gold trim.  The price tag was £89,000.00.  The table next to it was also glass and gold trim with a price tag of £189,000.00.  What kind of people would buy this kind of stuff?  We did walk through the children’s clothing section and I couldn’t see any price tags on the clothing.  I figured that people who buy kids clothes in Harrods are so wealthy, they don’t care what the price is.  We were anxious to get out of the store because it was so crowded.  We were both blown away by this place!  No, we didn't buy anything.  We just felt pretty posh, just to breathe the expensive air in this amazing place!

We were excited that we were able to connect on Friday with Hazel Price and her son David. (She was taught the gospel by my parents and is a dear friend.)  We had a lovely meal and visit.  We talked to David about the church and offered him a Book of Mormon, but he didn’t want one.  We also tried to see Pat Knight, but she wasn’t home.

We were able to clean the Methodist Church for the homeless project, which is always fun to work with our Anglican friends.  I was invited to attend the Nutcracker Ballet in Cambridge with Gosia Hutber, her mum and daughter, and we spent New Year’s Eve with the Hutbers, our dear friends.  We were also invited to dinner by some other dear friends in the ward, the Scammels and Lucy Wedderburn.  Like I said, we had quite a  holiday this week!  We have started organizing closets and cupboards to get the place ready for the Westenskows.  I wish we could paint it, but then it would lose some of its British charm!

We love you all!  Our time is short, so we hope we can get everything done we have planned!!!  Just to let you know, we will be leaving Cambridge on January 30.  We are spending a few days in the Lake District, and then heading to Scotland to see our dear friends, the Tilbrooks and stay in their hotel.  We will fly into Houston, Texas on February 10, and then arrive in SLC on Feb. 13.  We will be speaking in our ward in Orem on Sunday, 19 February at 1:00 p.m.  We would love to see you there!!!

The church is true!  We have had an incredible experience sharing our testimonies in a way I could never comprehend.  This has been a journey of incredible growth, joy, and increased love for our Heavenly Father and His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, as well as our family and friends.

With all our love,

Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas dearest family and friends!!!!

What a way to celebrate the Lord’s birth, in the mission field!  It has been a glorious past two weeks here in Cambridge.  We miss you all so much and want you to know how very much we love you!  We appreciate your letters, gifts, and messages of love, and all the adorable pictures!

One of the highlights of our week was our waffle breakfast with Brother Clements, our Zimbabwe monk friend!  We invited the elders to join us.  It was an incredible experience.  He had a lot of questions about Mormonism.  As a Catholic, he doesn’t believe in a great apostasy.  He feels the priesthood came down from Peter and passed on through today.  He wanted to know what the fullness of the gospel meant and how a 14 year old boy would be the one to receive a vision.   He asked why we needed the Book of Mormon.   He struggled with Adam and Eve and why the Lord would want to have them partake of the fruit in the Garden of Eden.  We had a very interesting discussion.  In the end we told him that he doesn’t need to take our word for it, but he can know for himself the truthfulness of what we teach.  We read him Moroni 10:4-5 and testified that we knew the Joseph Smith was a foreordained prophet and that the Book of Mormon is true.  He was here for nearly 3 hours.  We sent him home with a Book of Mormon and he wants to stay in touch.  We pray for him that someday the truth will penetrate his heart.

We visited with many friends, both members and non-members alike!  We rented a van so we could take the missionaries with us as we went to different parts of the ward to do some Christmas Caroling.  It was really a sweet experience.  We caroled for two nights with the missionaries.  After singing at a house, the family came out of their house next door.  We asked them if we could sing them a song.  Their little boy asked us to sing Away in a Manger.  As we sang, he followed along and sang every word.  I was really touched as he sang.  Our ward boundaries are about 60 square miles, so we had to prayerfully decide who to go to, as we were limited by time.  Each house was so welcoming and very touched to be remembered.  On Friday, we started out early and tried to get to the rest of the people we had planned on visiting, but couldn’t get to with the other missionaries.  We gave some dear friends copies of the Book of Mormon which were very touching opportunities.  It was an absolutely wonderful spirit filled week.

On Saturday we took the train into London to meet up with President and Sister Stevens at their flat along with about 30 other Senior missionaries for a delicious lunch.  We sang some carols together and then walked over to the Royal Albert Hall for a Christmas candle and carol concert.  We saw it last year and were anxious to see it again.  The orchestra was dressed in their knickered trousers and powdered wigs.  We heard beautiful music and sang about 10 carols together.  It’s fun to sing carols here, because several of the common ones, have the same words, but a different tune.  As a reader read parts of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, it truly was an inspiring English experience!  After the concert, we went with Elder and Sister Baron for crepes and then caught the train to Cambridge.

Sunday morning we attended Sacrament meeting and heard Brother and Sister Kenneth Johnson speak.  They have just been released as the London Temple president/matron.  We love this sweet couple!  We had invited two of our YSA’s for dinner and a recent convert as well.  All of our YSA’s have gone home for the holidays or have family here.  These three were by themselves, so it was fun to have them join us for a ham dinner and a game of Skip-bo.  For Christmas dinner in England, it is common to eat a lot of vegetables, so I prepared, brussel sprouts, carrots, and parsnips along with mince pies for dessert.  EVERYONE eats brussel sprouts, parsnips and mince pies for Christmas dinner!

We were able to talk to all of our children/grandchildren and wish them a Happy Christmas!  As much as we miss them, it won’t be long before we will be able to hug and kiss them!  Our cute neighbors, the Steen girls made us a gingerbread house, and Tony, brought over his 4 month old granddaughter and asked if we had room in the inn for her!!  Just to hold this beautiful little Phoebe soothed a grandma’s aching heart on this Christmas day!

We love you!  As we ponder the Christmas story we recognize how the Creator of the heavens and earth condescended to enter mortality as a babe in a manger, in a lowly country village.  And yet because of His life, His atonement, death and resurrection, we honor and celebrate that Christmas story!  We love Him.  As we follow Him, love Him, and serve others as He did, our lives can be filled with peace, and happiness.  We know He lives!  We worship and give glory and honor to Him.

May the New Year be full of joy and great peace for you our dear family and friends.

With all our love,

Christmas is in the Air!!!!

Dear family and friends,

Is it possible for the time to fly so fast that two weeks fly by and you think it has only been a week?  Well, guess what….. that is what is happening in our missionary life!  I can’t believe how fast the time is zipping past!  We have had an incredible week (I mean 2 weeks!).

Christmas is in the air!  We feel it and we love it!  “The Light the World” iniative has been a great source of joy to us.  It is miraculous how little acts of service really do light the world!  The Spirit of love is shared and received in very tender and memorable ways!  As President and Sister Steven’s told us, Christmas in the mission field can be a life changing experience.  We can testify of that!

We have been involved the past 2 weeks with missionary flat inspections.  Although, these can be somewhat “temporal” assignments, we find them uplifting as we get to visit with the young missionaries, and see the lists of investigators on their hanging white boards, and the goals they have set!  Where else would you have your heart fill with love for 18 and 19 year old men and women who are focused on bringing the light of the gospel to the world!  The is truly a miraculous work to behold and to be a part of!  We are able to see the “goofy” side of these “teenagers”, but when they talk about the gospel, when they conduct meetings, when they teach the gospel, the Spirit takes over and we see how the Lord strengthens and provides with His compensatory power.  It is a miracle to behold!

We have started again the Cambridge homeless project in concert with 7 other local churches.  This year we were able to have our ward join in the project.  We are assigned one night a month to provide a meal for 15 homeless men in the Methodist Church across the street.  We had two families volunteer to help us.  It was truly a humbling experience to work side by side with good Christian people who want to serve God’s children.  Now, as we see these friends walking down the street, we greet them with hugs of true kinship!  Now, while on a mission, I have learned a lot of things.  Well, I learned something last week as taught to me by our friend, the Baptist minister, how to make coffee!!!!  Now that is something, I’m not sure every missionary will learn!!!

Also, last Saturday, we had our last opportunity to serve with the Anglican Church in working in the Ascension Cemetary.  We cleared out a large area and were able to plant Yew trees.  Now, when our grandchildren serve missions in Cambridge, we will send them to check on our trees!!!!  Following the work project, we were invited for mince pies and mulled wine!  One of the sweet ladies who has become a very dear friend, made a delicious non-alcoholic wassail for the Mormons.  We had a chance to visit with these friends we have come to know and love.  I met Marie, a sweet lady from Lusanne, Switzerland.  I told her of my Swiss heritage.  She asked me how my ancestors ended up in Utah.  It was a tender experience to share with her how my grandparents were converted to the Gospel, were ostracized by some and chose to join the body of the Saints in Utah at the call of the living prophet.  Our Anglican friends were quite amazed that members of the church would have been treated that way.  They are so impressed with the young missionaries and young single adults that come to serve.  We even had a write up in their monthly newsletter!!  They begged us to come back and visit them when we come back.  This has been a highlight of our mission, to become really good friends with these wonderful Christian people.

Another highlight of our week was the visit we had with our young married couple in our ward who want to join another church.  They came to the Ward Christmas party and we were able to visit them at their home.  They are very friendly and welcome us to come and visit.  We shared with them the Light the World video.  Brad asked them how they felt.  They shared some very deep feelings and then Brad bore a very powerful testimony of the Savior.  The feeling in the home was one of peace and great spiritual joy.  We have such a deep desire for this couple to come back and pray sincerely for them.  It is experiences like this that give us hope that something will touch their hearts!

We have a wonderful week ahead of us as we have plans of sharing Christmas joy with so many of our dear friends!  We miss you all and pray for you that you will feel the Spirit of Christ!  Please know how much we love you all!

Happy Birthday to our dear Carlee Nelson on December 17th!  We love you Carlee and can’t believe that you will now be going to Young Women’s!  You are one in a million, a beautiful girl, with a tender heart that touches so many, including your grandparents!  Happy Birthday to our sweet Samuel Spencer Bishop on December 21st!  He will be turning 1!  What a light he is to our family!

We have felt the Spirit of the Lord in our lives as we have served Him.  What a glorious experience we have had and continue to have!  The Lord’s Plan of Salvation is truly a plan of happiness!

Happy December!!!!

 Dear family and friends,

Happy December!!!  The most glorious time of the year!  May your month be filled with magical moments of service and feeling the Spirit of the Lord in your lives.  As we put up our Christmas tree, I pulled out the family ornaments Nate and Becca sent last year.  They grace our tree and it looks magnificent!  The four littlest warriors are still pictured in ultrasound form!  We can’t believe how all our precious grandchildren have changed, and we can’t believe how fast this past year has flown by!

Each week it seems we do very similar things, so I know this must get really monotonous to read.  I’ll just highlight a few experiences that were really special for us this week!
As you know, every six weeks we have transfers, so at our waffle breakfast this week we said good-by to our dear district leader Elder Moulton from Provo!  He was a fine missionary and luckily he won’t live too far away from us in Utah.

We were invited by our dear neighbors, the Steens, to attend their Christmas concerts, one for Elizabeth who plays in a community orchestra in Hitchin.  It was fun to drive through this lovely little village knowing that Dad and Mom served there.  Then we were invited to join the Steen grandparents to hear Alicia and Isobel sing.  No matter what the country, these school carnivals and concerts are all the same-a lot of noise and excited children!

We attended our dear friend, Vivienne Cook’s father’s funeral.  Yes, we have had a lot of funerals in this neck of the woods.  This was a particularly tender funeral for me.  In all that was said about this dear man, despite his busy church callings, and working to provide for his family, (they never did say what his profession was!), he was first and foremost a fabulous father.  He had a really rough childhood and so was determined to make his own home one with loads and loads of love.  And apparently, it was just that.  All those who spoke and those we talked to knew this dear man as a wonderful father who made everyone feel loved and important.  I think it was tender to me  because he reminded me of my own father and father-in-law.

Well, we’ve started our missionary flat inspections again and as always it is such a pleasure to meet new missionaries and revisit those we already know.  I’ll not get over how precious these young elders and sisters have become to us.  We are all involved in the same work and it bonds us in a way that we will be eternally connected!

We had a group of Senior office and family history missionaries call us up and ask us for a tour of Cambridge.  What a fun group!  The Felsteds, the Rees’s, the De Johns, and the Barlows.  Bailey Scott, one of our YSA’s took us on a tour of her college, Gaius, then we saw King’s chapel, City Centre, the backs, and enjoyed lunch at the Eagle Pub, a famous pub in Cambridge where the British airmen from WWII signed their names on the ceiling, and also, where the discovery of DNA was first announced to the scientific world!  (The atmosphere was awesome, but the food wasn’t very good!!!)  They wanted the 2 mile walking tour, and not the 10 mile walking tour.  It’s a good thing because after lunch, they were cold and tired so we sent them on their way.  But what a great missionary memory for us.  People who visit Cambridge want to come and see the university, but don’t realize that the University consists of 31 separate colleges.

One of our highlights for the week was an email we received from Brother Clements, our Catholic friar  friend from Zimbabwe!  When he couldn’t come for Thanksgiving Dinner, he said he needed about 2 weeks notice to schedule a visit.  So I gave him two weeks notice, and he is coming in 2 weeks for breakfast.  He said that now his classes are over for the Christmas break, he has more time for reading!  I sent him an email and told him I had a great book for him to read!  We’re anxious for a 2 hour discussion on the 21st!

Another highlight happened on Sunday, 4 Dec.  We scheduled several weeks ago to attend church in Southend on Sea with Terry and Yvonne Ebbs, the dear friends Brad met on his first mission.  He spent his first Christmas with them 43 years ago.  They are the ones who have been inactive for over 30 years.   We met them at the chapel and were so excited to see them!  They had come to Cambridge Ward a few months ago and even went back to the Southend ward on their own a few weeks back.  Members of the ward are so excited to have them back.  As it was fast Sunday, Brad felt he needed to share his testimony and bore a powerful witness of the Church, the Savior, Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.  He told the members he had served for 6 months in Southend 43 years ago, and expressed his love for the Ebbs.  Immediately after the meeting, a lovely lady came up to us and introduced herself.   Her name is Wendy McDonald.  She remembered Brad.  She is Catholic and lives close to the church.  She said 43 years ago, she and her 2 year old son were in a really bad way.  The missionaries showed up at her house and offered their services.  She asked them to please cut her grass that was about 3 feet deep.  As she watched Brad, and his companion and others help her, she felt such love for this church who exemplified Christian service.  That very morning, (Dec. 4) she awoke early and said she felt strongly that she needed to attend church in the Mormon building.  She was there and when Brad spoke, she said, “I knew it was you, the same missionary who helped me 43 years ago.  I need to go talk to the young missionaries!”  Now whether she is an investigator, or just showed up that day, we don’t know.  Maybe nothing will ever happen, but the thing that touched us so, was that a simple service by humble missionaries 43 years prior in her life made an impression for good on this sweet woman.  She had to leave to go to work, so we couldn’t find out any more details.  Brad did not remember this woman or the service.  We met another wonderful man, the high councilman.  He was from Zimbabwe.  We were instantly friends!!  His first name was Clemens, and I couldn’t understand his last name.  But he said he would meet us again at the Harare, Zimbabwe Temple dedication!!  Hey, now that sounds fun, huh, Justin and Amber!!!  We left the church with such gratitude for the Lord’s hand in our lives.  It was a glorious day!

We love missionary work!!  We love you all!  Have a wonderful week!

Happy Week

Dear Family and Friends,

Cheers to all our favorite people!!!  We hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving!  Tis truly the season for great rejoicing and the time to give thanks for all our blessings!  It was great to visit with so many over the week!  McKinley and Jordan, we sure hope you are feeling better!  It was a rough week for you and your parents.

We had a wonderful week.  We enjoy FHE with our young single adults.  We have a discussion and then have so much fun playing games together.  On Friday we hosted the Stake YSA’s here in our ward building for Institute.  We had about 15 kids this time, which was a pretty good showing.  Most have to drive over an hour to get clear out here where we are.  The Stake is rethinking a once a month Institute class for the whole stake as the transportation is such an issue.  Most YSA’s don’t have cars and a lot of them don’t even have driver’s licenses.

Thursday, we hosted an American Thanksgiving dinner here for our young single adults.  It was really fun.  We had 16 people.  We had an investigator come who had never had a Thanksgiving dinner and was so excited to try everything and anything.  Most of those who come have never had the experience before.  I think it kind of blows them away!  We had a riot playing Trivial Pursuit afterwards.  We had four of our missionaries come and they always love a hot meal!  I absolutely LOVE Thanksgiving!  Then on Friday, we got to take our YSA committee to the London temple.  Brad and I took the names Chloe sent to us to receive their endowments!  Chloe, that was really a sweet experience for us.  Thanks again for your efforts!

On Saturday, we spent the day with the Haskins, our dear friends!  They took us to see Southwold and some other seaside villages on the North Sea.  The day turned out to be absolutely gorgeous.  As we walked out on the Southwold pier, the sun was shining and the sound of the surf was music to our ears.  The salt sea smell was invigorating.  We enjoyed a wonderful fish and chips meal at a local pub which was built about 600 years ago.  The food was very good and the atmosphere of the place was brilliant.  We felt we had stepped back in time.  The rooms were small, the undulating floors added so much charm.  We ate in front of a huge open fire place.  The open beam and plaster ceilings were low.  It was cozy and oozing with charm!  I love this country!  We had stopped at a church which is supposedly haunted and found a lovely community of people setting up for a Christmas Market.  Brad bought a  tie for 1 pound, and I bought a beautiful Christmas wreath made with fresh holly  and pine boughs.  I couldn’t get over that they were real!  The church didn’t feel haunted at all, even with the blackened scratch marks from Satan on the door!!!  The angels were a little bit spooky looking however!

Our dear friend Clinton went into the hospital to have a stint put into his heart.  The ward had a special fast for him.  The doctors were concerned that the vein in question would require open heart surgery.  However, after further consultation, they found that they could take care of the problem intervenously.  The fast really touched Clinton.  His goal is to get to the temple before we leave!  He is now very motivated!  It is amazing how challenges help us look at life with heavenly eyes.   We really love Clinton.  Brad calls him his brother from another mother!  He is big, tall, and very black.  Brad introduces him as his brother and then asks, “Can’t you see the resemblance?”  There are a lot of very special friends we will miss!

We met with another YSA couple from the Bury St. Edmunds Ward to talk about their young adult program.  We found out the Claire grew up in Hitchin.  I asked her about my parents and said, they served in Hitchin when they were on a mission here.  She said, “Oh, I love the Glauser’s.  They taught my grandparents.”  Her grandfather, Ron Kilbey, although, still not a member, loved them very much.  Out of all the missionaries that taught him, he felt a special cohesive bond with Dad and Mom.   He said, there was really something special about this senior couple.   He is now attending church about every other week.  One never knows the impact they can have without them even knowing it!!!  Thanks Dad and Mom for your example!

We meet every Tuesday night with our dear friend Kalil!  He comes for supper and scriptures.   It is a sweet highlight of our week.  He adores our little Jordan!  He really feels connected to all of our little stripling warriors!  Brad went to his soccer game on Thanksgiving night.  Luckily, Brad was there as a fight broke out and he was able to get Kalil out of there before something even worse happened.  Kalil told me that he was glad that I wasn’t at the game.  The referee looked at Brad’s name badge as he was leaving and commented that he wished Jesus Christ would have been there at the game.  It was pretty rough.  I was just grateful Brad and Kalil got out of there safely!

Happy Birthday to our dear little Russell on November 29 (age 1)!  And to our Kinners (age 3) on December 4!   You are very special little people!! Happy Anniversary to Brian and Heather on December 1!  We love you all and miss you a ton!

Our time hear is going fast.  We are anxious to work hard!  We love our Heavenly Father and His Son!  The gospel of Jesus Christ is here upon the earth in its fullness.  We are so grateful to be a part of this great latter-day work!  We love you all!

With all our love,

Dear family and friends,

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!  I just want you to know that the grocery store does not sell fresh turkeys this time of year!  Only frozen!  Because our wonderful British friends don’t celebrate my favorite holiday!!!  But we will be thinking of you this Thursday!  Please know how grateful we are for all of you!  You are the ones who have made our lives so richly blessed!

We helped with another funeral in our ward.  The dear man who passed away, Derrick Lavendar was a very good man.  He raised a wonderful family.  We love his wife who is very active in the ward.  He was not a member and has spent the past several months in a care center.  We had some lovely visits with him and Brad was able to help with a blessing.  We love helping with the funeral luncheon as it gives us an opportunity to meet their family, give comfort and express love.  We agree with President Boyd K. Packer that a funeral is one of the best times to feel the Lord’s Spirit very close.

We had a very sobering week!  We have felt several promptings to meet one on one with some of our precious young single adults.  Every one we met this week was having a crisis of faith.  These are great young people, new converts, and life-long members.  Yet, they are wondering if God is really there?  We listened and prayed for wisdom in what to tell them.  We felt deeply touched that they would open up so honestly with us, but, by the end of the week, I was emotionally drained!  Brad said, now you know what it is like to be a Bishop!  (I’ve never wanted to be a Bishop anyway!!!)  I have been able to see how clever Satan can be.  He is ruthless and is going after the best of the best.  We were able to fast with one of our YSA’s on Sunday and felt spiritually rejuvenated.  We are finding that our prayers are getting longer as we add more people to pray for.  But the miracle is this!  We are finding that our love is expanding!  We are experiencing what I feel is Godlike love and genuine empathy for these precious souls.  I am also realizing how crucial it is to live a consistently obedient life.  We often wonder why the brethren keep telling us to do the little consistent daily things; prayer as individuals and as families, scripture study with real intent individually and as a family, keep the Sabbath Day holy!  All are a defense against the adversary.  I know this to be true.  As we let these things slip, it allows us to become casual, and when we become casual, we allow Satan a foothold in our lives.  Please dear ones, stay committed to righteousness!

We had a grand experience of teaching our friend, Jo, the Restoration of the Gospel.  We met her through a common friend and she agreed to have us come to her home.  We had a great conversation and then asked her about her religious beliefs.  This led us into telling her about the church and then right into the Joseph Smith story.  That is my favorite discussion!  We left her a Book of Mormon and with a challenge to read and ask if it is true.  It is a miracle to me to see the Spirit take over as we teach and testify.  Unfortunately, she said she is not interested.  (We are used to that!!!  So when Elder Anderson talks about 1000’s joining the Church every month, they must be all joining in Mexico!!!)  But we felt so good about our evening with her, I can’t help but pray that she will think about what was said and read the Book of Mormon and share it with her daughter who loves to study about other religions!

We had a great highlight this week!  A member of our ward is a major in the airforce here at a local U.S. airbase.  He is the chief flight officer and flies a fuel tanker jet.  He has even fueled Airforce One a few times!  He arranged a red carpet tour of the base for us.  We had to show our passports to even get on the base.  He arranged for us to use the jet simulator for about and hour and a half.  Brad was like a kid in a candy store.  I sat in a back row seat.  Brad got to fly the plane.   He did great!  We didn’t even crash! The graphics were incredible, and the simulator moved, tipped, and rolled just as if we were flying.  He even set up the graphics for Las Vegas and they both buzzed the Las Vegas Strip.  It was very impressive.  Then we got to tour the real jet and lay down in the back section where the boom operator goes to connect the boom arm to the jet below they are refueling.  The thing that impressed me most about this jet was when Josh told us the plane was designed and built in the 1960’s.  The engineers used slide rules to do the configurations.  (I used those when I took trigonometry in high school!)  The specs on this jet are so simple and good that they haven’t had to update them at all.  These tankers are some of the best built jets in use.  Amazing!!!  These tankers can carry 140,000 lbs. of fuel and they refuel jets at 6000 lbs./minute.  The jets can take off with that much weight, but cannot land with that much weight, so if they don’t refuel anyone, they have to fly around until they burn off sufficient fuel.  After our jet tour, we checked out the base commissary!  I loved it, to see all those American groceries was a modern day miracle for me!!!!

We had an amazing full week!  We have been asked by our Stake Presidency to do some training to the other ward’s YSA leaders.  We are meeting some incredible people who we love immediately!  We feel as though we have been lifelong friends.  They all want to visit when they come to Utah!!!  Absolutely!

This missionary calling is the best!  We love what we are doing!

Stay strong!  We love you and we miss you!  Keep the faith!!

With all our love,

Winter is Here!!!

Dear family and friends,

Winter surely came with a vengeance this past week!  We are so grateful we have a warm home and hot water!  With the humid air here, it is very cold.  The days are getting shorter.  It starts to get dark here around 4:00 in the afternoon.  Street lights are not readily available in areas other than main traffic routes, so it really seems very dark!

It was a great week!  We feel the need and desire to spend time with individuals.  We have set up an appointment each week with one of our favorites!!  Kalil Studer, a young man from Brazil.  He has a gift for languages and speaks French, Portuguese, Spanish and English.  He is young in the church, so he comes over every Tuesday night for dinner and scriptures. We met with our 91 year old friend, Leslie Ryan, and a lovely young investigator Shira for lunch with the missionaries.  We were invited for dinner this week from our friends, Jim and Nita Haskins.  We have taught them the game of Skip-bo and they love it!  We also met their friend, Jo.  We talked to her about coming to see her to tell her about what we do as missionaries.  Next blog, I’ll tell you about that great experience!

Harry, one of our new members brought us over some death certificates of his ancestors.  We volunteered to take him to the cemetery where his grandfather was buried.  It was close to Cambridge, in a place called Ramsey.  We looked over the whole place, but couldn’t find his grandfather or grandmother.  We called the person on the church marquee and talked to the wife of the person in charge of the cemetery registry.  She invited us to come to her home and wait for her husband.  Unfortunately, we had to leave, but we had a delightful conversation with Patty McPherson.  We asked her if she would like us to tell her about the gospel and she quickly sent us on our way!  But I talked to her husband on the phone later and he found the person we were looking for and also talked to another cemetery registrar person from another cemetery to find the grandmother.  He mailed us the information.  He was so kind and we are anxious to go back so we can find the burial places.  Harry was so excited!

We invited the Budd’s over for dinner and were lucky to have David, their son, join us as well.  I’ve been having a great email exchange with our new friend, the Catholic Friar, Brother Clements.  I’ve shared the restoration discussion and the Plan of Salvation discussion with him.  He in turn has shared some of his beliefs.  We continue to communicate, and we have felt as though we have met a great friend in him!

On Saturday, we trained to London to meet up with Clark and Joyce Baron for a p-day!  We went to the National Portrait Gallery, which was amazing.  Brad and I browsed through a section featuring the works of Picasso.  His earlier paintings are amazing, but then he started getting weird!    I can’t say that we’re fans!  But it was great to think we were seeing original art that I have only seen in textbooks.  After the gallery, we saw “The Phantom of the Opera”.  We have seen this once, but I was amazed that I didn’t remember a lot of the story.  It was fabulous.  The costumes, the staging, and the music were brilliant!  We enjoyed dinner after at a Thai restaurant.  It was a marvelous day!  We love Clark and Joyce and it is so fun to be serving with them in England!

I was asked to speak in Sacrament Meeting on sacrifice.  Then we traveled to Ipswich to do some YSA leader training for a couple in our stake.  We had ward council first thing in the morning, so it was a long day of meetings.  We finished off our day with a visit to a young married couple in our ward.  We have been asked to be their home/visiting teachers.  As we started our visit, they told us that they were going to have their names removed from the records of the church and be confirmed in the Community of Christ Church.  It was a very sobering conversation.  My heart just hurt for them.  All we could do is bear pure testimony of the gospel.  There was a definite dark feeling in their home, and I really fear for them.  We asked them if they would still allow us to come and to be their friends.  They were very anxious for us to come visit them.  Brad offered a beautiful prayer.  I didn’t sleep very well as I was so worried about them.  But we communicated with them on Monday morning, and asked them not to rush into anything.  They will still join the other church, but I felt that they have their agency, and what they need from us is just to shower them with love and friendship.

I’m beginning to think that the purpose of our being here is to share our love with those who are struggling, or who have lost their way.  We offer and invite we testify and pray.  So many don’t want the gospel, but they are hungry for a friend.  We have found many fabulous friends!

We are finding that each day is full to the brim with service opportunities.  We love it!  There is still much to do.  We fill so much a part of Cambridge, and are very anxious to finish strong these next few months.

We want to wish a very Happy Birthday to Dad Jackman and MaryAnn on November 19th!!!  We love you both very much and give thanks for the impact for good you have been in our lives!

Thank you, Grandpa and Grandma Glauser for spending time with our kids!  They loved being with you and learning from you.  We loved the pictures!

Have a great week!!!  We love you all so very much!  The work we are involved with is God’s work!  We are definitely the weak and simple ones called to the work, but we love it!!!

Love,
